AMERICAN FORK — A scooter ride through an American Fork cemetery turned scary for a 60-year-old man last week.

Police arrested a 46-year-old mentally ill American Fork man who they say tried to repeatedly run over the scooter rider with his vehicle at the cemetery Thursday, according to a 4th District Court affidavit of probable cause.

After riding his scooter past a parked car, the scooter rider, who is disabled, said the man in the car chased him. The man said he was barely able to swerve onto some grass to avoid the vehicle. After missing the scooter, the driver slammed on his brakes, skidded to a stop and then, spinning his tires, tried to run the scooter rider over again as he rode back onto the cemetery road.

The scooter rider was finally able to reach a group of people, and the man in the car sped away. After his arrest, the man told police he was trying to scare the scooter rider out of the cemetery to protect the other people. The man was booked into Utah County Jail on $20,000 bail.
