BOUNTIFUL — A woman was hospitalized Wednesday night after a dog bit her while attacking her dog.

A woman was walking her two dogs around 8 p.m. near 1000 East 700 North when an Akita — a medium-size dog — started attacking one of her canines, Bountiful police Cpl. Kerry Bell said. She grabbed her dog by the collar to break up the fight and the Akita bit her thumb, tearing flesh from above the first joint.

Bell said the bite wasn't intentional and he noted witnesses said the dog is typically "people friendly."

Animal Control has quarantined the Akita to check for rabies. The woman was taken to Lakeview Hospital. Bell said she was listed in good condition.
