Fiesta Mexicana will showcase the history and culture of Mexico with the seventh annual celebration of Mexico's Independence today from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Washington Square in downtown Salt Lake City.

Admission is free.

The daylong event will display Mexico's regional diversity in dance, food and culture.

This year's celebration of the 198th anniversary of Mexican Independence from Spain will include performances from internationally recognized Grupo Marimbistico of Chiapas UNICACH's and dances from the Ballet Folklorico of the Universidad Autonoma de Chiapas.

Accompanying these groups is a delegation from the state of Chiapas including Rep. Carlos Arturo Penagos, secretary of International Affairs, and Lic. Juan Carlos, Cal Y mayor, the director of economic development.

A civic ceremony "El Grito de Independencia" will be held at the Consul of Mexico at 7 p.m.
