MEN'S TENNIS: The Cougars competed with considerable success during the first day of the Utah Fall Tennis Classic held at the BYU outdoor courts.

Eight Cougars will play in singles competition in the Round of 16 today, including head coach Brad Pearce and last year's lone senior Jonathan Sanchez. Also included in the final 16 are returning players Cassidy Mears, Bradley Ferguson, Evan Urbina and Thomas Shubert and newcomers Travis Fillmore and Georgy Batrakov.

Matches will start at 9 a.m. today and 9:45 a.m. on Saturday. All matches are free and open to the public.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Cougars fell to Long Beach State 3-0 Thursday evening.

"Long Beach is a very good team, and we didn't get a good start today," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We've had a lot of experiences these three road games that we need to learn from. We can play at a higher level than we have been, but we haven't proven that yet."

Sophomore forward Kristen Kiefer started the scoring for the Beach in the 26th minute. Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Bullock and freshman midfielder Shawna Gordon scored in the second half for the final tally.

The BYU team was without leader senior forward Katie Larkin, who broke her wrist in a hard fall in BYU's 1-0 loss to Marquette over the weekend.

BYU hosts Idaho State on Saturday at 7 p.m. on Sept. 13. Fans can get into the game for $1 by showing their ticket stubs from the BYU-UCLA football game, and students can get in for free by showing their student ID.
