WASHINGTON Congress has approved and sent to President Bush an $8 billion rescue package for the federal highway trust fund. The infusion comes as the trust fund verges on going broke, threatening road and bridge projects in every state.
The 376-29 House vote Thursday came a day after the Senate approved the legislation transfering $8 billion from the Treasury's general fund to the highway fund.
The White House had previously threatened to veto the measure. But it changed its position after the Transportation Department last week revealed that the trust fund, which relies on the federal gas tax, was running out of money.
