The Utah group Nine Mile Canyon Coalition wants the area its group is named after to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. So far efforts to get the site listed have been met with opposition from the Uintah County Commission and the Bureau of Land Management.
The group will make its pitch at a Uintah Public Lands Committee meeting Sept. 15, 7 p.m., at the South Conference Room of the Administrative Building, 152 E. 100 North, Vernal.
Nine Mile Canyon is prized for its extensive collection of outdoor Indian rock art panels of petroglyphs created centuries ago. The coalition and other watchdog groups claim industrial traffic through the canyon is destroying the rock art.
