PROVO — Ignoring the pleas of his victim's young daughters, police said a Provo man became violent during an argument with his girlfriend Monday.

The man, 37, and his live-in girlfriend got into a fight at a Provo residence, according to an affidavit of probable cause. After the fight, when the woman tried to leave the house with her 9- and 7-year-old daughters, the man became violent, refusing to let them leave. Police arrested the man and booked him into the Utah County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault in the presence of children and unlawful detention.

As the woman attempted to leave the house, the man grabbed her by the throat and pushed her onto the ground, all while the two girls were watching, police said. With the girls begging the man not to hurt their mother, he held the woman against a wall by her throat and at one point choked her to the point of loss of consciousness. Police also said the man pulled out a small folding knife, telling her she shouldn't make him do something wrong.
