A defense attorney says a woman accused of killing her 9-year-old brother in a restaurant kitchen last year is considering a plea agreement.
Rebecca Hernandez-Velasco and Pedro Gaucin-Canales both are charged with first-degree murder in the death of Josue Contreras-Velasco, who suffered hypothermia after being left in a garbage can full of ice water at the Melting Pot restaurant. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges in 3rd District Court.
On Friday, defense attorney Solomon Chacon said Hernandez-Velasco may accept a deal. A hearing is set for today.
Salt Lake County prosecutors declined to discuss the possibility of a deal, or if it would involve Hernandez-Velasco potentially testifying against Gaucin-Canales at a Sept. 15 trial.
