ISLAND PARK, Idaho (AP) — State police are investigating two vehicle crashes on U.S. Highway 20, one that injured 11 people and a second blamed for injuring three and killing a German girl.

Idaho State Police officials say the collision that injured 11 may have been caused by one motorist falling asleep at the wheel Monday evening near Henry's Lake and colliding with an oncoming motorist.

All six passengers in one vehicle and five in the other were treated and released at hospitals in Idaho Falls and Rexburg.

The second crash occurred near the Pine Haven area during a heavy thunderstorm.

Police say the driver, Gerald Renner, of Germany, lost control of his vehicle and collided with an oncoming motorist. The force of the crash jettisoned the spare tire from the trunk to the backseat, killing the girl.
