WEST VALLEY CITY — Police Sunday identified the knife-wielding man who was shot and killed by an officer Saturday.

Richard Jackson, 40, told police he was going to kill his ex-wife as he held a knife to her throat and began counting down. Police opened fire as he was counting, killing Jackson. The woman was not injured in the incident.

The officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated by an outside agency — a routine procedure in officer-involved shootings.
