PAROWAN — An 11-year-old Parowan boy was found dead Sunday morning in a creek near his house after what police believe was an ATV accident.

Parowan Police Chief Preston Griffiths said the father of the boy told police his son had left for an ATV ride at about 8 p.m. Saturday night with the promise that he'd be back by 9 p.m.

The father awoke at about 1:30 a.m. and discovered the boy had not returned and called police. Parowan police, along with some of the boy's family members and friends, began a search early Sunday morning and discovered the ATV submerged in a creek about a mile from the family's home shortly before 6:30 a.m. A friend of the family found the boy's body, also underwater, a short distance from the vehicle.

Griffiths said heavy rains moved through the area Saturday night at about the same time the boy was riding. He speculated that the boy may have crossed the creek before the rain, and when he recrossed it, encountered deeper and faster-moving water due to the storm.

Griffiths said police were not ready to release the name of the boy Sunday night.
