Midvale police report a man who threatened his wife with a handgun surrendered after a two-hour standoff at the couple's home Saturday night.
Midvale police Sgt. Chad Egan said the dispute began Saturday evening at a downtown Salt Lake bar and erupted into violence after the couple returned home. Egan said the husband, who police believe was intoxicated at the time, was armed with a handgun when he told his wife she could not leave the house. She managed to escape anyway, and phoned police just before 10 p.m.
Egan said a SWAT unit was called in to deal with the armed suspect and the man refused to come out of the house when officers arrived. The specialized team was unable to coax the man out of the house and deployed several "distraction devices," after which he exited the home and surrendered peacefully.
Egan said the man will likely be charged with aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping.
