WEEK 2 PREVIEW
UTAH VS. THE WORLD: Last season, Utah teams fared well against out-of-state competition, compiling a 27-18 (.600) record against non-Utah opponents.
This season, Utah schools play 40 games against out-of-state schools. That is over 8-percent of all regular season games. Opponents include teams from such far flung places as Raymond, Alberta (at Bear River, Sept. 12), Massillon, Ohio (vs. Jordan on Saturday), Honolulu (Kamehameha vs. Davis at Weber St., Sept. 4) and Orlando (West Oaks vs. Box Elder, Sept. 26).
This Saturday, four out-of-state teams invade Utah for a pair of double-headers in St. George. The Headliner will be Northridge vs. Crespi (Encino, Calif.), ranked No. 22 nationally by MaxPreps.com. Here is the schedule of games there:
• at Dixie High: Delta vs. Globe (6 p.m.) and Pine View vs. Dominguez (9 p.m.)
• at Snow Canyon: Hurricane vs. Show Low (6 p.m.) and Northridge vs. Crespi (9 p.m.)
The other games: Delta vs. Globe (Ariz.), Hurricane vs. Show Low (Ariz.) and Pine View vs. Dominquez (Compton, Calif.).
RIVALRY GAMES: Bitter rivals Beaver and Kanab clash for the 80th time since 1950, which ties for the ninth most-played rivalry in the state. The Beavers lead 43-36 in a series that includes seven matchups in state championship games ... Wasatch and Morgan also battle for the 80th time; the Wasps lead 47-30-2 ... Grand meets Monticello for the 57th time, leading the series, 40-12-4 ... Springville plays Lehi for the 52nd time, leading the series, 30-17-4 ... Uintah and Carbon face off for the 41st time since 1929; the Utes are on top 28-20-2
ALSO: In the media-touted game-of-the-week, Alta hosts Bingham. Since their series resumed in 2001 after a 12-year break, Bingham holds a 6-3 edge. All-time, Alta leads 12-8...Bonneville and Weber meet for the 48th time; the Lakers lead 33-14 in an uninterrupted series dating to 1960 ... Granger plays Roy for the first time since 1990, and Cottonwood meets Layton for the eighth time, but first since the 2000 season.
FIRST-TIME MEETINGS: Seven games pit teams against each other for the first time. In addition to the four in the quadruple header, Bear River is at American Leadership, Desert Hills plays at Salem Hills and Sky View visits Campbell County (Gillette, Wyo.).
MILESTONES: Orem is gunning for its 450th victory (hosting Snow Canyon), while Alta is cruising towards its 200th (hosting Bingham) ... North Sanpete is trying to be just the 22nd school to score in at least 80 straight games when the Hawks host Ben Lomond on Friday. North Sanpete hasn't been whitewashed since 2000 ... Skyline's Roger DuPaix is attempting to pick up win No. 275 (an ongoing state record), while Bingham's Dave Peck is going for his 100th coaching win ... Fremont's Cory Bosgeiter and Kanab's Bucky Orton are shooting for their 50th career victories.
FINALLY, FROM LAST WEEK: Desert Hills became the 30th school to win its inaugural contest out of 125 schools that have played football in Utah. By defeating Salem Hills this weekend, the Thunder would be just the 13th team to win its first two games, as well. For the record, East Carbon holds the record as the Vikings won their first six contests when the school opened in 1959.
