Police have released the name of the 4-year-old boy who was run over and killed at a bus stop Thursday morning in Saratoga Springs.
The boy, Cooper Mardesich, had gone with his mother to walk an older sibling to the bus stop at the T-intersection of Wagoneer Road and Parkway Boulevard just after 7:30 a.m., when he was run over by a van driven by a 15-year-old boy without a driver's license, police said.
After the children had boarded the bus at the neighborhood bus stop, the bus pulled out and headed north. Cooper then began biking across the street, behind the bus. His mother was still with other parents on the other side of the road, police said.
The van, waiting at Wagoneer Road, turned left after the bus pulled away, also heading north, but the driver failed to see Cooper in the road and ran over him. There is no marked crosswalk at the intersection, police said.
Cooper was transported by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center but did not survive an operation to address his significant internal injuries. He died later Thursday afternoon.
Police are investigating whether the driver had a learner's permit, where he was going and if he had permission to be driving the family van.
