This photo of Mia Peterson's tearful goodbye to her father was named the year's best photo.

A heart-wrenching photograph of a young girl crying and waving goodbye to her father as he boards a plane for a military deployment was recognized Friday as the Associated Press Managing Editors Photo of the Year.

The shot of 3-year-old Mia Peterson with her mother, Rebecca, was taken in February by Deseret News photographer Jeffrey D. Allred as the 2nd Battalion, 211th Army Aviation Regiment was boarding a plane in Utah to begin a 12-month deployment to Iraq.

The photograph had already earned Allred an APME photo-of-the-month award in February, which put it in the running for the year-end competition.

Allred will receive a plaque and $1,000 prize at the Associated Press Managing Editors/Photo Managers conference next month in Las Vegas.

The recognition was the latest in a string of awards Allred's work has earned this year, having been previously distinguished in competitions sponsored by the regional Associated Press and the Society for Professional Journalists.
