I marvel at the audacity of Republicans in Congress. Before the August recess, Democrats offered four amendments addressing the energy crisis. All were rejected by Republicans, even though they included expanded offshore drilling, oil shale production and nuclear power.

What Republicans don't bother to tell you is this: The Bush administration's own energy advisory concluded that an increase in offshore drilling or opening up ANWR would not affect gas prices for another 15 to 20 years and that effect is projected to be around 5 cents a gallon. Why so little? Because we participate in a global oil market.

The Republican theme this election year seems again to be: Lie. Lie often. Then lie again. Eventually the lie is accepted as truth.
