Police say a man wanted for attempted homicide in New York was caught in Salt Lake City but not before he first tried to disarm officers.

About 7:30 p.m. Sunday, officers received a tip that Hannasan McGhie, 30, was in the area of 1700 South and 300 West. McGhie has a warrant issued by the NYPD for attempted murder, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

As an officer grabbed the man's arm to put him in handcuffs, McGhie broke free and ran, said Salt Lake police detective Jeff Bedard. The fleeing man wasn't watching where he was going, however, and tripped over a street curb and fell to the ground.

Officers again tried to handcuff the man while he was on the ground, but three times he tried to grab the guns of two officers, Bedard said. Each time, officers had to grab the man's hand and get it away. McGhie was finally handcuffed and arrested.
