De Lamar Gibbons thinks we need to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Readers' Forum, Aug. 15). But drilling in such sensitive places will only boost the already historic profits of oil companies. It certainly won't make a difference in the price of gasoline.

According to the U.S. Energy Department, "new oil from (the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) would lower the world price of oil by no more than $1.44 per barrel — and possibly have as little effect as 41 cents per barrel — and would have its largest impact nearly 20 years from now ("U.S. News and World Report," May 23).

We'll save at the pump if we "drill Detroit" and offer Americans a fleet of cars that go farther on a gallon. There's no reason for this to be a partisan issue. Let's pull together and make this happen.
