Kyle Orton was selected to be the Chicago Bears' starting quarterback by coach Lovie Smith on Monday.

Orton won the competition with Rex Grossman for the starting job.

Orton, the fourth-year player from Purdue, will start Thursday's third preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers and the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Indianapolis Colts.

"I think I've just continued to get better in the preseason — in the games and in practice — so this will be another step to take," Orton said.

Orton and Grossman began battling for the starting spot in May minicamp and the workouts in June. Then the competition intensified in training camp.

BROWNS QB ANDERSON INJURED: Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson left Monday night's exhibition game against the New York Giants early in the second quarter with what the team said was a possible concussion.

Anderson was hurt was he was sacked by Osi Umenyiora. He walked off the field and went to the locker room for further examination. He was replaced by Brady Quinn.

49ERS QB O'SULLIVAN STILL STARTING — FOR NOW: J.T. O'Sullivan will remain the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback for a third consecutive week, but coach Mike Nolan again stopped short from saying that O'Sullivan is the starter for the regular season.

Nolan said Monday that O'Sullivan will start Thursday's exhibition game against the Bears in Chicago. The sixth-year journeyman, with his eighth NFL team, has emerged as the team's top quarterback in a summer competition with veteran holdovers Alex Smith and Shaun Hill.

BRADY UNSURE IF HE'LL MISS GAME: Quarterback Tom Brady isn't sure if a foot injury will sideline him from the Patriots' third exhibition game Friday night after he sat out the first two.

The injury is on the same leg but different from the right ankle injury the quarterback suffered in last season's AFC championship game against San Diego, the NFL's reigning MVP said in a radio interview Monday.

"Just trying to be smart," Brady said on WEEI in Boston after skipping the trip to Tampa Bay for Sunday night's 27-10 loss to the Buccaneers. "The preseason is important, but I think the idea is to be ready for when the regular season kicks off."
