A new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report says traffic deaths in Utah increased during 2007, even as the number of traffic deaths nationwide continued to decline.

The report says traffic fatalities in Utah increased by 4.2 percent in 2007, while the national number went down by 3.9 percent.

The Utah Department of Transportation says the increase from 287 Utah deaths in 2006 to 299 deaths in 2007 was driven primarily by people who were speeding or not wearing seat belts.

Nationwide, though, the number of deaths declined in 2007 to the lowest level in 16 years.
