FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) — An out-of-control fire at a California air base has destroyed at least 80 vacant homes slated for demolition.

Fairfield Fire Marshal Morgana Yahnke said no evacuations had been ordered Saturday at Travis Air Force base.

The blaze started as a grass fire and quickly spread to the base, about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento. Residents of the base have been told to stay indoors with the windows closed to protect themselves from smoke.

There's no word yet on how the grass fire started.
