An early morning shooting in Salt Lake City Saturday left a 24-year-old man in extremely critical condition, according to police.

Salt Lake police had responded to a different call in the general area of 516 E. Elwood Place, a downtown Salt Lake residential neighborhood, where the shooting occurred. They heard several shots fired and rushed to the driveway of a residence and found a man, who had been shot several times.

The victim was taken to the University of Utah Medical Center where he underwent extensive surgery.

The incident occurred at 3:07 a.m., according to Salt Lake Police Lt. Scott White.

Police have identified a suspect they believe was involved and the department's gang unit was summoned to the scene as part of the overall investigation.

"It's not necessarily gang-related, but we're certainly looking at that aspect," White said. "Sometimes they (gang unit officers) are called out and it is not gang-related."
