Three men with an assault rifle, including a former University of Utah football player, were arrested early Friday morning following a high-speed chase with police.

The events began about 3 a.m., when 911 dispatchers received a call from a man saying he was being chased by a white sport utility vehicle near 4100 S. Redwood Rd. and that the people inside were firing at him, said West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

An officer on patrol near 3500 S. Redwood Road saw a white SUV drive by, and although she did not see anyone shooting, she thought it might be the vehicle in question and attempted to pull it over. But the vehicle did not stop, and the ensuing chase reached speeds of 90 mph and lasted nearly 25 minutes, Merritt said.

The chase ended near Kaysville when Utah Highway Patrol troopers used tire spikes to stop the fleeing SUV. They found spent shell casings, as well as alchol and methamphetamine, inside the car, and they found the assault rifle on the side of a freeway on-ramp the suspects used during the chase.

The men, each 20 or 21 years old, were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. One of the men arrested was former U. football player Ezekiel Wily, who was jailed for investigation of drug possession. Wily, an Orem High School graduate, played 12 games for the U. in 2006 and five last season, but was kicked off the team in June for "undisclosed violation of team rules," according to school officials.

Investigators were looking Friday at whether the incident was gang-related or could be connected to any other recent gang activity. Detectives had not been able to locate a victim because when police call the phone number where the 911 call originated, there is no answer or the person hangs up.
