PROVO—BYU is finalizing its 2009 football schedule and the final non-conference game could be filled by Tulane — possibly as the season-opener in New Orleans, La.

While nothing is official yet, BYU sports information director Jeff Reynolds acknowledged Friday morning that BYU officials are talking to Tulane officials about playing next season.

"We have been in negotiations with several schools regarding our final non-conference game of 2009, including Tulane. We hope to have the schedule finalized in the next week or so," Reynolds said.

The Cougars are scheduled to face Arizona State in Tempe on Sept. 12, 2009 and Florida State in Provo on Sept. 19 (that date is according to nationalchamps.net). BYU and Tulane could possibly meet on Sept. 5 in the season-opener. In that case, the Cougars would start the season with a pair of road games.

BYU is also scheduled to play Utah State at home next season.

Alabama was originally on Tulane's schedule, but the Crimson Tide reportedly backed out so it could play Virginia Tech next season.
