CEDAR CITY (AP) — A bat discovered in a Beaver County home has tested positive for rabies.

Health officials do not know if the home's residents were bitten by the bat or infected.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most of the recent human rabies cases in the U.S. have been caused by the rabies virus from bats.

Health officials say anyone who sees a bat should not touch it, especially if the animal appears sick.

The state health department says that although bats are the animals most likely to have rabies in Utah, fewer than 1 percent are actually infected.
