The NIMBY (not in my backyard) energy policy we are following may ruin the economy, but it will not save the planet. Coal is burned in the Utah west desert to supply California with electricity and salve the conscience of those who believe themselves to be friends of the environment. Apparently, there is no pollution associated with electricity produced outside of the California. If the Western Climate Initiative carbon-footprint tax spreads nationwide and drives petroleum refining out of our backyard, the United States may have Utah "west deserts" in places around the world with all the environmental protections of Chernobyl.
