It is time that the Deseret News and your readers help make a stand against a word that has gained popularity but is offensive to so many. The "R-word" or "retard" seems to be accepted by so many. In fact, it is said 16 times in one scene in the film "Tropic Thunder," which opens in theaters this week.

The word hurts, even if it is not directed at a person with intellectual disabilities. When you hear that word, think about 26-year-old Brett Banford of Salt Lake City, a talented dancer who appeared on "So You Think You Can Dance" and appears in the upcoming "High School Musical 3." He has a job and is a Global Messenger spokesman for Special Olympics Utah.

Help make change by boycotting "Tropic Thunder."
