FARMINGTON A man accused again in a cold case slaying has been rearrested. Edward Lewis Owens, 57, surrendered to authorities Monday morning and was booked into the Davis County Jail on a warrant charging him with first-degree felony murder. He is being held without bail pending an initial appearance expected Wednesday.
"We're not going to try to deal with bail at the initial appearance," said his defense attorney, Michael Studebaker, adding that they will wait until the preliminary hearing to address the issue.
Owens is accused of the 1980 slaying of Karin Strom, who was found strangled to death inside her Woods Cross home. Owens was charged with the killing last year, but Davis County prosecutors dismissed the charge in December 2007 because DNA test results were not strong enough to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Prosecutors refiled the charge last week after police said they have found blood on her clothing and had it sent to a lab for analysis.
"We've also spoken with the DNA lab about having independent analysis performed," Studebaker said.
Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings has declined to comment on the case.
