I read Cathy Free's column regarding not running red lights (July 31), and I certainly agree. It's a great tragedy when someone gets hurt by drivers trying to beat a red light.

While there is no excuse for this behavior, I believe there is another side to this story. And that is the frustration drivers feel when they wait for a green light, only to see the light just ahead change to yellow and red, the same with the next light and so on. It's very hard to be forced to stop at light after light that are set up purposely to slow traffic. This is something we've been talking about for a long time: coordinated traffic lights that ensure an even flow of traffic.

There is no excuse for running red lights, but the government can help by coordinating lights.
