PROVO, Utah -- President Merrill J. Bateman opened a four-day family history conference Tuesday by saying ordinances of the temple are meant to be an "especially" spiritual experience.

President Bateman, an emeritus general authority, former president of Brigham Young University and current president of the Provo, Utah Temple, was the keynote speaker at the 40th-annual Conference on Family History and Genealogy at BYU.
