I don't understand Jennifer Beckstrand's logic when she expresses anger at the supposed America bashing in Obama's most recent speech in Berlin (Readers' Forum, July 26). I somehow doubt she even listened to it.

There is absolutely no case for regarding it in any way unpatriotic or a putdown of America. On the contrary, the entire speech is about how much the world needs America and tries to drum up support for efforts to work together to fight terrorism and environmental and humanitarian problems — hardly subjects calculated to feed anti-Americanism.

Yes, he believes Iraq was a mistake, and he makes reference to this. But to implicitly criticize the Bush administration and to accept that we have problems is not disloyalty. Americans who opposed the illegal and ill-conceived adventures in Iraq and have often been against this disastrous administration take issue with such an insinuation.
