I find it appalling that Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson, a superdelegate, will skip the Democratic convention. Apparently this is not the first Democratic convention he has missed. His explanation of working on his campaign and seeing his son's teacher as he enters fourth grade are pretty shallow excuses.

When he was elected to be the state's representative, he knew that he had responsibilities and they sometimes take precedence over family matters. The survey about the 2006 general election indicated only 36.7 percent of the registered voters in Utah voted — the lowest in the country.

Apparently many Utah voters have the same apathy concerning voting in elections as Matheson. Mr. Matheson leads by example.
