WEST VALLEY CITY — Three police officers placed on administrative leave in connection with the fatal shooting of a man attempting to rob a jewelry store have been cleared to return to duty.

On July 1, police responded to a burglary in progress at Pailin Jewelry Store on Redwood Road.

A robbery alarm was triggered inside the store at 5:43 p.m. and officers arrived as a man attempted to leave the store with a clerk. The woman managed to escape on her own before three police officers shot and killed the man, Thanh Minh Tran.

An investigation revealed that after his hostage broke free, Tran shot at police, who returned fire, striking him in the torso.

Tran died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave while the case was reviewed by the Salt Lake County Attorney's Office.

In a news release issued Friday, the county attorney determined that the officers, Anthony Ricci, John Dietrich and Dan Hamilton, responded to the shooting within the parameters allowed by state law.
