OREM — Copper was the metal of choice for a suspected American Fork thief arrested last week.

The owner of Southam and Associates, a commercial architectural sheet metal work and roofing company, along with his brother-in-law, responded to the American Fork business late Friday night after being alerted by an alarm company, according to a 4th District Court affidavit of probable cause.

When the pair arrived at the business they saw a man in the front office area. When then entered the building, the man left the building. The two confronted the man and recognized him as an employee of the business, according to the affidavit.

Police said the man, who does not have access to the office, stole several sheets of copper and put them in his vehicle. With the suspect's consent, officers searched the vehicle and discovered approximately $2,800 worth of copper sheets, according to the affidavit.

There was also $424 in the suspect's vehicle, which he admitted to police he took from the office, according to the affidavit.

The man was arrested and booked into Utah County Jail on investigation of burglary and theft.
