OGDEN (AP) — A handful of parents in Ogden may have to foot the bill to clean up after their children's graffiti.

In the coming weeks, city officials plan to sue several parents whose children vandalized city property. City officials say the lawsuits will seek damages of up to $2,000 for each incident.

Mayor Matthew Godfrey says he hopes the lawsuits will send a message to parents that they can be held responsible for their children's behavior.

Ogden Police Lt. Loring Draper, who heads the city's gang unit, says the juveniles targeted in the lawsuits are responsible for 17 cases of vandalism that resulted in $21,000 in damage.
