As a person who retired from the U.S. Air Force with more than 20 years of service, as well as being a 20 percent disabled veteran, I am thoroughly appalled at the proposal by Jeff C. Herring, the executive director for the Department of Human Resource Management, who is seeking to eliminate Veterans Day for state employees. It is to resolve an issue with the governor's executive order mandating a four-day work week for public employees. It is inconceivable that this action would be considered as our country is in a time of war. The apparent lack of respect shown toward veterans is apparent. President Calvin Coolidge once said, "The nation which forgets its defenders will be itself forgotten."
