Rather than raising costs for students, Salt Lake Community College's Skills Center is cutting them.

Officials at the school haven't significantly raised the center's fees in years — and now they say they're trimming them by 22 percent.

The tuition cuts affect training programs for truck drivers, medical billing specialists, mechanics, electronics technicians and other trades.

The move, affecting about 1,900 students a year, is expected to provide a total savings for students of around $254,000 over the next year.
