For many years, Americans have been afraid of nuclear power. Someone only needs to say the word "nuclear" and people get visions of mushroom clouds in their heads. What most Americans do not know is that nuclear power, while it might sound scary, is actually the safest current source of energy known to man.

For many people, the fear of nuclear power comes from the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The Soviets were basically just begging for an accident to happen. On the other hand, the worst nuclear disaster in American history was the Three Mile Island accident where, due to good planning and numerous safety precautions, the amount of radiation released into the atmosphere was harmless.

While no one can claim nuclear power is risk-free, our current sources of energy are far more dangerous.
