Salt Lake City police Monday were looking for a suspect in a shooting outside a downtown club.

A 24-year-old man was leaving the club, near 900 S. State, when a fight started outside, said Salt Lake police detective Rick Wall. During the fight, a man produced a gun, fired and struck the victim in the ankle, he said.

The victim claimed he was not part of the fight, but detectives were still investigating that Monday, Wall said. After the shooting, the suspect got into a black pickup truck with white lettering on the back and drove away.

The victim, however, waited until he got to 800 West and 300 North before he called police. Initially, there was some confusion indicating that the man was shot during a drive-by at that address while walking down the street.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
