A 19-year-old Holladay man has been charged with hitting a woman more than 40 times with a hammer and then telling her mother to lie to police about the incident.

On July 2, the man slapped, punched, bit, choked and kicked his live-in girlfriend while their baby lay crying on the floor, according to charges filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court. He also held a screwdriver to the woman's throat and hit her repeatedly with a hammer, according to the charges. He told the woman "she was stupid and that he needed to knock some sense into her," according to court documents. Police said the man then threatened the woman's mother if she didn't lie to police about what occurred.

The man has been charged with felony counts of aggravated assault, witness tampering and domestic violence in the presence of a child.
