ST. GEORGE (AP) — St. George city officials logged 5,000 miles on nine flights in the hopes of getting a better idea about building an airport in their city.

St. George Councilman Jon Pike says he and four other council members toured three airports in Michigan and Georgia to see what works and what doesn't.

The city is planning to build a new airport capable of handling regional jet service. The work is expected to get under way this summer and be completed by 2011.

City officials used the trip to talk with airport managers and city officials in those two states about their airports. They also talked with passengers about what they liked and didn't like about the airports they visited.
