PARIS — The Syrian president says he wants France and the United States to contribute to peace efforts between Syria and Israel.

Syrian President Bachar Assad says in a joint statement released after talks with French leader Nicolas Sarkozy that he would like France together with the U.S. to "fully contribute to a future peace agreement between Syria and Israel."

Assad says he would like to see that happen both in direct peace talks between leaders and in implementing an accord.

Assad and Sarkozy were meeting Saturday on the eve of the start of a Mediterranean summit that brings together 43 countries, including Israel.
