The shooting of Maria Del Carmen Menchaca is but the tip of the iceberg. The first thing the public says is "we need more cops" and "it took them more than 15 minutes to get here." The fact is, these calls came in 15 years too late. The cops can now only clean up the mess. The community and politicians call for more cops. The cops can't make you stop dressing like a gangster, but parents can. The cops can't ask where you got the money for the new Cad SUV without a job. The cops can't push you to get an education and speak English; parents can.
I don't think I was the only viewer who was shocked that most of the pallbearers for Maria had chosen to come dressed as East L.A. gangbangers, even though Maria's picture was on the back.
Trust me, they don't get it. The iceberg is dead ahead.
