Following Friday's morning matches at the Utah Men's State Amateur golf tournament at Soldier Hollow, sixteen players remain heading into the afternoon matches.

The most exciting morning match featured 51-year-old Steve Poulson against 15-year-old Patrick Fishburn. The two finished 18 holes tied, but on the first extra hole Poulson drained an 80-foot birdie putt to win in 19 holes ... Another thrilling match saw Jeff Jolley outlast Ogden teen Zach Blair 2 and 1, despite the fact that Blair made seven birdies and did not bogey a hole.

Defending champion Nick Nelson advanced by beating Jason Hargett 4 and 2, and he'll face Poulson in Round 2. Jolley advances to play Dan Horner, who knocked off teen Brandon Kida 4 and 2. Nathan Page edged Steve Borget 1-up to move on to face Christian Jensen, who throttled Corbin Gale 6 and 4. BYU's Nick Killpack stopped Andrew Barton 2 and 1 to earn the right to face Carl Jensen, who toppled Clay Bingham 4 and 2.

In the other bracket medalist Michael McRae, a 4 and 2 winner over Justin Labrum, will meet 1998 champion Darrin Overson, a 4 and 3 winner over Kyle Chappell. Dixie State's Casey Fowles beat Toph Peterson 3 and 2 to get a match with O. J. Ainsworth, who sent 15-year Taylor Haws home 3 and 1.

Devin Daniels moves on with a 3 and 1 win over Michael Curtis, and he'll face John Owen, who slipped past Utah Valley's Jeff Holmes 3 and 1. Another BYU golfer, Robbie Fillmore, beat Lance Richards 2 and 1 and will face Tyler Labrum, who edged Brady Stanger 1-up, in the day's final match.
