A retrospective exhibit of 50 paintings by Gary Ernest Smith is on display at the new gallery, Great Basin Cooperative, 449 Main in Park City.
Each work in the exhibit has been rendered within the last 20 years and showcases Smith's love of the rural West through his bold, iconic figures and tonalistic panoramas.
The artist came to Utah more than 40 years ago as a student and received his master's degree in fine arts from Brigham Young University.
"Designated a neo-regionalist, the renowned artist manages to defy conventions with a humanistic perspective on his subject matter," said Natalie Petersen of the Springville Museum of Art. "An undaunted color palette and minimalist forms have since landed his work in galleries and collections across the country."
