Some gay and heterosexual couples choose to live together, yet believe they are not married unless they have a wedding. Those people must also believe they do not get older unless they have birthday parties. Real marriage is a loving relationship between two people.

Also, some gay couples desire to gain legal rights by getting married, while some heterosexual couples desire to avoid legal entanglements by not getting married.

Legal rights and protection for couples can be better obtained by working with lawyers. Spiritual marriage involves two people and their God. Civil unions involve two people and their government. Most other arrangements can rightly be classified as benign hedonism, which is the chosen lifestyle of most Americans and Europeans.
