Maria Del Carmen Menchaca was not "in the wrong place at the wrong time" as I have read repeatedly during the reporting on her tragic death. A 7-year-old girl playing in front of her home on a Sunday evening is in exactly the right place at the right time. Gang members driving through residential neighborhoods firing weapons at homes are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sadly, unless they choose to walk away from the gangster lifestyle, the people allegedly involved in her slaying will likely meet a similar end — gunned down by meaningless violence. At least they still have the ability to choose to fulfill the potential they were born with. Maria does not.
