Columnist Thomas Sowell (July 3) approvingly quotes French Marshal Philippe Petain on the importance of patriotism but conveniently leaves out the marshal's later role as head of the French Vichy government that collaborated with Nazi Germany and arranged for the deportation of French Jews to their deaths in concentration camps.

The sort of patriotism that Mr. Sowell is advocating — dehumanizing our enemies, refusing to seek for understanding or tolerance — carries another name. It is called fascism.
