Does columnist Charles Krauthammer (July 6) really believe that there are no real differences between the positions of Barack Obama and John McCain? I can think of a few.

Obama opposes a permanent American presence in Iraq, McCain supports it.

McCain is suddenly OK with torture now that he has to fire up the criminally insane foreign policy faction of the Republican base (which includes Krauthammer). Obama still opposes it on principle.

Obama wants us to talk to Iran like civilized adults, McCain wants to "bomb bomb bomb" away.

Obama wants to deal with the budget crisis in a way that does not include doing away with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. McCain proposes we ignore the problem, cut the income tax again and start more wars.

Sounds like a pretty stark difference to me.
