A Salt Lake County man has been charged with assault after police say he hit his father in the head with a hatchet earlier this week.

The 18-year-old went to his father's home near 7500 West and Jefferson Road (3695 South) on June 30 and began throwing things around the house, according to charges filed Thursday in 3rd District Court.

The man then grabbed a hatchet and hit his father in the head, cutting him, court documents state. The son then continued wrecking the house, causing more than $1,000 in damage.

He has been charged with aggravated assault and criminal mischief, both third-degree felonies.
